UFC Fight Pass will be the starting point for three straight nights of promotions staged by the world’s leading MMA organization. The trifecta of shows will begin with Rafael dos Anjos vs. Eddie Alvarez, for the UFC Lightweight Championship, at UFC Fight Night 90, which will air exclusively on the companies network. A universal groan can now be heard by fans not subscribed to the network.
The card takes places on Thursday July 7th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will be followed the next night with The Ultimate Fighter Finale: Team Joanna vs. Team Claudia, an event topped off with a straw-weight title bout between the shows coaches. Then the massive UFC 200 card ends the series of shows on Saturday July 9 in Vegas’ brand new T-Mobile Arena.
The decision to have a card led by a top pound-for-pound fighter, and title fight, is a clear play to gain more new subscribers to the fledgling network. If this were a WWE production, Dana White would likely be heard saying (for you wrestling fans reading this), “it’s what’s best for business.” Despite disappointing fans that don’t have, or plan to subscribe to, the network, this is a major bout announcement.
Dos Anjos (25-7) will be defending his title for the second time and looking to extend his winning streak to six. Alvarez (27-4) is the #1 contender on the companies rankings and is 2-1 in his stint with the organization.
