Byran Murray Steps Down- Pierre Dorion in as Senators GM

After indicating in the spring of 2015 that he would soon be stepping down as general manager of the Ottawa Senators, Bryan Murray made it official Sunday morning when he renounced his title.  Murray served as general manager of the Senators organization for a total of nine seasons, coming into the scene midway through the 2007-2008 season.  Murray was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in July of 2014, and it was highly speculated as the beginning of the end of his role as GM.  He said that his doctors weren’t pressuring him to step down, but it was rather in his own conscience, so that he would be able to spend more time with his family- time that he had not been able to have a lot of in past years.  Plus, with his contract expiring after the 2015-2016 season, Murray found it appropriate to make his move.  He will still remain with the Senators organization and will be serving a Senior Advisory role.

Soon after announcement that Murray was stepping down, the Ottawa Senators named Pierre Dorion the new general manager of the club.  Dorion joined the club in 2007 and has served as the club’s chief amateur scout since 2009. Immediately Dorion will be faced with some challenges, the biggest of which will be to decide the fate of head coach Dave Cameron and the rest of his staff after the club failed to reach the post-season for the second time in three seasons. Dorion had this to say to Senators fans and supporters after receiving his new role- “We want to thank our fans for their passion for this team. We will win together.”

The Ottawa Senators missed the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs and finished the 2015-2016 season with a 38-35-9 record.
