The Winnipeg Jets have lost yet another player for this season. Defenseman Tyler Myers will miss the remainder of the 2015-2016 regular season due to having to get both knee and hip surgeries. The club announced that Myers underwent successful knee surgery this morning. And in the upcoming weeks he will undergo another surgery- this one for his hip. That surgery will require a 16-20 week recovery period. It’s looking like it will be a long off-season of rest and rehab for Myers.
Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice told reporters that the club knew that Tyler Myers would need to undergo hip surgery, but his knee injury came suddenly and in order for him to be able to be available at the beginning of the 2016-2017 season, the decision was made that he would undergo surgery now. “If we waited until the end of the season, did the knee, it would push the hip closer to May which now gets into October gets into the regular season before he is back kinda on the ice playing which would be a true miss of training camp for us,” Maurice said. “Tyler had his knee done this morning. He is done for the rest of the season. At the appropriate time when there is enough healing on the knee then he will have the hip done. Timing out hopefully that means mid August to September month that he will be cleared to get back to full training.”
Tyler Myers ended the year with 9 goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 73 games played, averaging a total of 22:37 of ice time per game. The Jets are well out of a playoff spot, currently tied for third-worst in the National Hockey League with 66 points. The Jets acquired the former Calder Trophy winner from the Buffalo Sabres as part of the package they received in last season’s Evander Kane trade.
