NCAA March Madness 2nd Round Recap for the South Region. Kansas Jayhawks, Villanova Wildcats, Maryland Terrapins & Miami Hurricanes advance to Sweet 16.

March Madness: South Region Second Round Recap in NCAA Tournament

Kansas Jayhawks cruised to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament with a victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies 73-61. Villanova Wildcats are playing on all cylinders and had little trouble in defeating Iowa Hawkeyes 87-68.

Miami Hurricanes had dangerous moments in their second straight game and blew a 21-point lead. However, they recovered to defeat the pesky Wichita State Shockers 65-57. Maryland Terrapins won 73-60 over Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The game was close mid-way in the second half when the Terrapins took over.

Saturday March 19, 2016 –
Wells Fargo Arena – Des Moines, Iowa
1 – Kansas Jayhawks (32-4) – 73
9 – University of Connecticut Huskies (25-11) – 61
Kansas defeated the Connecticut 73-61. Kansas made six of their first nine attempts from 3-point range. Landen Lucas, Jamari Traylor and Perry Ellis grabbed 44 rebounds for Kansas. They held Huskies to 16 rebounds. Wayne Selden Jr. and Ellis combined for 43 points.

Kansas handed Huskies head coach Kevin Ollie his first loss in the NCAA tournament. UConn came within nine points at the midpoint of the second half, but the Jayhawks were able to pull away and head to the Sweet 16 to meet the Maryland Terrapins.

Sunday March 20, 2016 –
Barclays Center – Brooklyn, New York
2 – Villanova Wildcats (31-5) 87
7 – Iowa Hawkeyes (21-10) – 68
Villanova’s Ryan Arcidacono scored 16 points and Daniel Ochefu had 11 rebounds. The Wildcats took command in the game about 12 minutes into the first half and finished the half 54-29. Villanova made seven of their first 10 3-point shots. Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff led his team with 19 points, Nicolas Baer had 15 points and Peter Jok scored 11 in a losing cause. Villanova moves on to the Sweet 16 to face the University of Miami.

Saturday March 19, 2016 –
Dunkin’ Donuts Center – Providence, Rhode Island
3 – Miami Hurricanes (27-7) – 65
11 – Wichita State Shockers (26-9) — 57
Miami defeated Wichita State 65-57. The Hurricanes appeared to be in command finishing the first half 32-19. However, with 10 minutes 25 seconds left in the game, the Shockers took a one point lead after Miami blew a 21-point lead. Miami’s Angel Rodriguez who was partially responsible for losing the big lead, helped lead his team back into the game. Rodriguez made a big 3-point shot with 72 seconds remaining. In the end, Rodriguez scored 28 points, five assists and four steals.

The Hurricanes were also led by Sheldon McClellan scored 18 points and three rebounds. Wichita senior guards, Fred VanFleet and Ron Baker scored 12 points and 11 points respectively.
Sunday March 20, 2016 –
Spokane Arena – Spokane, Washington
5 – Maryland Terrapins (27-8) – 73
13 – Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (28-6) – 60

Maryland missed its first six shots, but after a very slow start, they were only down 10-4. Behind Diamond Stone’s four baskets, the Terrapins finally took the lead 14-13. Maryland led 28-27 at halftime.

Hawaii went ahead 41-39 midway through the second half with Terrapins missing their first 15 3-point shots. Maryland’s Melo Trimble hit the first 3-point shot that was part of a sizzling 14-0 run. Maryland went on to win 73-60.

Maryland’s Melo Trimble scored 24 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Diamond Stone added 14 points. Hawaii had a great season and were led by Mike Thomas who had 19 points and 11 rebounds.
