March Madness: South Region First Round Recap in NCAA Tournament
Kansas Jayhawks held serve in their first round matchup and cruised past Austin Peay. Villanova Wildcats had little trouble in defeating UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Thirteenth-seeded Hawaii Rainbow Warriors upset fourth-seeded California Golden Bears. In another shocking upset, the eleventh seed Wichita State Shockers handily defeated the Arizona Wildcats (70-50)
Iowa Hawkeyes won in overtime on a last second buzzer-beater over Temple Owls. Maryland Terrapins won 79-74 over South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Miami Hurricanes over came a 9-point first half deficit and defeated the Buffalo Bulls 79-72

1 – Kansas Jayhawks (30-4) – 105
16 – Austin Peay Governors (18-17) – 79
Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Austin Peay Governors 105-79. Kansas jumped ahead early and led by 20 points at halftime. The Jayhawks were led by Svi Mykhailiuk who scored a career-high 23 points. Perry Ellis scored 21 points. It was the tenth straight win for the Jayhawks in an NCAA first round game.
Friday March 18, 2016 –
Barclays Center – Brooklyn, New York
2 – Villanova Wildcats (29-5) 86
15 – UNC Asheville Bulldogs (22-11) 56
Villanova’s Ryan Arcidacono scored 14 points, which included a buzzer-beating 3-point shot at the end of the first half. Fellow Wildcat senior Daniel Ochefu had 17 points inside to help Villanova win 86-56 and roll into the second round.

3 – Miami Hurricanes (25-7) – 79
14 – Buffalo Bulls (20-14) – 72
Miami Hurricanes defeated the Buffalo Bills 79-72. Miami was led by Angel Rodriguez who scored 24 points. Teammate Sheldon McClellan scored 20 points and five rebounds.

4 – California Golden Bears (23-10) – 66
13 – Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (27-5) – 77
Hawaii won its first NCAA tourney game in school history defeating the California fourth-seeded team 77-66. Hawaii were led by Quincy Smith who scored a career-high 19 points. Hawaii had a strong first half led by Stefan Jankovic who scored 16 points. Cal’s leading scorer Tyrone Wallace who broke his hand/wrist Wednesday in practice.

5 – Maryland Terrapins (25-8) – 79
12 – South Dakota State Jackrabbits (26-7) – 74
Maryland caused a turnover in the last seconds to defeat South Dakota State 79-74. Terrapins were led by Jake Layman who scored a career-high 27 points.

11 – Wichita State Shockers – 70
Wichita senior guards, Fred VanFleet and Ron Baker led a second half surge to defeated the favored Arizona squad 70-50. The guards were part of the Shockers 2013 Final Four team. Three starters were part of a Wichita State team that defeated Indiana and Kansas and reached the Sweet 16 last year.

Iowa’s Adam Woodbury scored on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime to give Iowa a 72-70 victory. Iowa entered the tourney having lost six of last eight games.

8 – Colorado Buffaloes (22-11) – 67
9 – University of Connecticut Huskies (24-10) – 74
University of Connecticut defeated the Colorado Buffaloes 74-67.Connecticut started slow and quickly fell behind by 11 points. The Huskies turned up the defense in the second half and were able to defeat Colorado. Huskies head coach Kevin Ollie is still undefeated in the NCAA tournament. Connecticut’s Rodney Purvis scored 19 points (15 in the second half). Purvis’ teammate Daniel Hamilton scored 17 points and 10 rebounds.
