Sunderland currently have twelve players out on loan. Some with the view to a permanent move and some with a view to gaining valuable first-team experience and competing for a place in the Sunderland first team squad in the future.
Sunderland Loan Report: Liam Bridcutt Impresses For Leeds United
The players currently on loan are:
Steven Fletcher – Marseille
Sebastian Coates – Sporting Lisbon
Lynden Gooch – Doncaster Rovers
Will Buckley – Birmingham City
Liam Bridcutt – Leeds United
Dylan McEvoy – Boston United
Danny Graham and Jordi Gomez – Blackburn Rovers
Emanuele Giaccherini – Bologna
Santiago Vergini – Getafe
Charis Mavrias – Fortuna Düsseldorf
Adam Matthews – Bristol City
Liam Bridcutt starred as Leeds United beat a Blackburn Rovers side that included two other Sunderland loanees at Ewood Park. Danny Graham and Jordi Gomez both started for Rovers, but it was Bridcutt who shone. Speaking about Bridcutt, United manager Steve Evans had this to say: “I think Liam Bridcutt is a top quality player who loves playing for this football club. He leads by example, and his determination to win the game. I thought he was just sensational in the middle of the park.” Graham and Bridcutt both played the full 90 minutes for the respective teams whilst Jordi Gomez was substituted after 71 minutes.
Adam Matthews, who joined Championship strugglers Bristol City early last week, tasted victory in his second start for his new club. The Robins beat fellow relegation battlers Fulham 1-2 at Craven Cottage to ease their relegation worries slightly. The win puts them four points clear of the relegation places.
Lynden Gooch continues to experience the harsh side of football. Doncaster have now gone 11 games without a win and even though the young prospect played the full 90 minutes he could not prevent his side going down 2-1 away at play-off chasing Bradford City. Gooch recently extended his loan spell at Rovers until May 8th and as his development continues he will be hoping to be involved in at least a few wins between now and the end of the season.
Emanuele Giaccherini and his Bologna side, who were undefeated in their previous five games, visited the San Siro to play Inter. Unfortunately for Giaccherini, who played the full game, he could not prevent his side from losing 2-1. Recent reports have suggested that if the current Italian national side coach Antonio Conte were to take charge of Chelsea in the summer then the 31-year-old Giaccherini could be one of his first signings. Stranger things have happened in football. Watch this space.
Up against Lionel Messi and co at the Nou Camp, it was always going to be a tough day for Santigo Vergini and Getafe. And so it proved. Messi and Neymar were amongst the scorers as Barcelona ran out 6-0 winners. Getafe are now without a win in eight games and face an uphill struggle if they are to stay in La Liga.
After last week’s defeat to Portuguese Liga title rivals Benfica, Sebastian Coates and Sporting Lisbon returned to winning ways as they defeated Estoril 1-2 away from home. The win put Sporting top of the table, for 48 hours at least before Benfica play their game in hand.
Dylan McEvoy played the full ninety minutes but it was an afternoon to forget as Boston were defeated 2-0 at Chorley. Boston are currently on a poor run with four of the last six games ending in defeat.
Will Buckley was an unused sub for Championship play-off hopefuls Birmingham City as they drew 0-0 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
Charis Mavrias had an unhappy Sunday afternoon as he was substituted after 68 minutes as German 2.Budesliga strugglers Fortuna Düsseldorf were beaten 1-0 by Sandhusen.
Steven Fletcher failed to kick a ball for Marseille; he was an unused substitute as they drew with Lorient 1-1 away from home.
