Bad blood between the team and Weddle came to light during the 2015 season, causing a unavoidable separation. The team fined Weddle on December 20th for watching his daughter perform in a routine put on by the team’s cheerleading squad. He was placed on injured reserve for the final game of the season, citing a groin injury, despite him practicing all week. Weddle has remained productive in his advanced age with 78 total tackles and 6 passes defensed last season. He failed to record an interception for the first time in his career.

Eric Weddle was a Fontana, California native that played college football at Utah. While he was there, he was a consensus All-American and a two-time Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft by the Chargers, and the team moved up in the draft via trade for the chance to take him. Playing as the ‘dime’ back in the Charger defense behind then starting strong safety Clinton Hart, Weddle still managed to be highly productive, recording 53 tackles, 6 passes defensed and an interception in his rookie season. He went on to claim the starting free safety position next to Hart in 2008. At the end of his run with the Chargers, Weddle would become a three-time Pro Bowler and five time All-Pro. He has said that he has “3-5 years left in me”, but playing a physically demanding position can take its toll. What remains to be seen is if he can continue his top notch play for his new team at the age of 31.
