Sean Smith Reaches Agreement with Raiders on 4-Year Deal
Smith played in 13 games games last season after missing the first three due to a suspension for his DUI. He was very productive on the field, recording 45 total tackles, 12 passes defensed and two interceptions. The Chiefs definitely missed him during the first couple of weeks of the 2015 season. He was a solid piece on a very good defense and could be considered the best corner on the Chiefs defense over the last three years.
During the past seven seasons, he has been one of the bright spots for the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Pro Football Focus, Sean Smith is the best cornerback available in free agency. Smith has amassed 352 total tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 10 interceptions and 83 passes defensed in his career.
Smith has rarely missed a game for an injury. He turns 29 in July and his age could be his biggest question mark. However, he has played in at least 15 games every season with the exception of the 2015 season because of his suspension.
Smith was born in Pasadena, California and he went to high school there at Blair High School. Smith was a three-sport star in high school, playing football, basketball and running track. In football he earned All-Conference, All-State and All-American honors. In college, at the University of Utah he started out as a receiver but switched to cornerback. After recording five interceptions in his best season, he earned First-Team All Mountain West defensive back honors. After starting all but one game for the Utes in 2008, Smith decided to leave before his senior season. Smith was selected in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
