After taking an awkward fall during their game against the Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies guard Mario Chalmers is out for the season with a ruptured right Achilles tendon. While being on the ground, Chalmers told teammates and doctors that he “felt a pop.” When a player says that and the injury is around the leg area, it is almost always an Achilles injury. With Chalmers now out for the season, the Grizzlies have decided to waive him in order to open up a roster spot.
Chalmers seemed to be really enjoying his tenure with the Grizzlies. During his tenure with the Miami Heat, he was always on the trading block. Once he arrived in Memphis, he was a great backup to Mike Conley and was able to come in as a starter when needed. Chalmers was averaging 10.8 points per game and 3.8 assists per game since his trade to the Grizzlies. He gave the team a consistent backup who could score and shoot the three ball, which is Memphis’ kryptonite. And after suffering this injury, he will now have to recover and try to find a new home in the NBA.
For the Grizzlies, this injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. Marc Gasol is already out for the season while Conley and Zach Randolph are currently dealing with injuries. It may be a little unprofessional, but it was necessary for the Grizzlies to waive Chalmers. They need to find a point guard who will help the team immediately. The Grizzlies are currently 38-26 and are comfortably the five seed in the Western Conference. With their opponent in the first round more than likely being the Los Angeles Clippers, it is vital that they are able to find a player who can produce in the playoffs.
