Marvin Jones Signs With Detroit Lions

Marvin Jones appeared in all 16 games (starting 13) in 2015 after missing all of 2014 with ankle and foot injuries. He set career highs in receptions and receiving yards during this past season with 65 catches for 816 yards. His re-emergence contributed to Andy Dalton’s improved play, and along with A.J. Green and fellow free agent Mohamed Sanu, the Bengals formed one of the best wide receivers corps in the league.

Explosive plays are a staple of Marvin Jones’ game, as evidenced by his ten touchdowns in 2013. He pairs solid size with explosive run after the catch skills and can now run all the routes in the route tree. He can line up both outside and in the slot, adding scheme versatility to his repertoire.

The big question with the 26-year-old (his birthday is March 12th) is his health. All the talent is there to be a number one receiver but signing him carries with it the faith that the injury bug he contracted will stay in Cincinnati. Michael Crabtree rebounded from injury filled campaigns to post a solid season with Oakland, and it’s likely Jones will surpass those numbers in 2016.

Born in Los Angeles, Marvin Jones grew up in Fontana, California. He went on to star at the University of California-Berkeley, where he finished in the top eight in school history in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. After posting 62 receptions for 846 yards and three touchdowns during his senior season, he declared for the NFL draft. After a strong Senior Bowl performance he was drafted in the fifth round (166th overall) by the Bengals in 2012.
