After being waived by the Houston Rockets on February 26, Marcus Thornton has found a new home. He is set to sign with the Washington Wizards for the remainder of the season. Thornton is averaging 10 points per game this season.
It was a little surprising to see the Rockets waive Thornton. He really seemed to be enjoying his time there. Thornton had great chemistry with Dwight Howard and provided another outside shooter for James Harden to facilitate to. He was able to come in and immediately get the Rockets out of offensive slumps with his three point shooting. But after his trade to the Detroit Pistons being voided, it was only a matter of time before Thornton was going to be waived.
For the Wizards, this is a very solid pickup. Thornton is mainly known for his ability to move without the ball and his three point shooting. He is one of the streakiest shooters in the NBA. When Thornton gets hot from three, it is almost impossible to stop him. He can have 5 points one night and then drop 25 the next night. That’s just the kind of player he is. Although he has struggled to find a home in the NBA, he has contributed to every team he has played for. Thornton provides another shooter for the Wizards who will be able to spread the floor and provide instant offense coming off the bench. At this point, the Wizards need anyone to help them to keep their playoff hopes alive. They are 2.5 games out of the final spot in the Eastern Conference, but time is starting to run out with about 20 games left in the season.
With the acquisition of Thornton, the Wizards are set to release Gary Neal. Thornton will be able to provide more offense than Neal did for the Wizards. It is do or die time for the Wizards, and they are making the necessary moves.
