Carl Nassib 2016 NFL Draft Profile
What hasn’t been said about the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year? Every week during the 2015 season, Carl Nassib put up exemplary numbers. Nassib’s story is one that sports’ fans love: entered Penn State as a walk-on and worked tirelessly to become one of the most dynamic defensive players for the Nittany Lions.
Initially, Nassib had important and large shoes to fill in replacing a position formerly held by three standout starters. Starting in his sophomore season, Nassib began his campaign for a starting position and showed signs of his foreshadowed impact on the defensive side of the ball for the Nittany Lions. After much improvement during his junior season in 2014, 2015 would easily be considered his year. Nassib started in each game of the 2015 season and recorded 31 solo tackles, as well as 15 sacks.
Nassib’s impact on the game was incredibly evident. His play on the field made it undeniable that he was worthy of the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and arguably unthinkable that he was not named as a member of the Associated Press All-American First Team. To add to his accolades, Nassib accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl where he impressed scouts from the Washington Redskins in practice, although he did not play in the game.
Strengths
- Straight line speed
- Tenacity to improve
- Flexibility
Weaknesses
- Stiff at times
- Still somewhat raw as a player—only started for one season (2015) his entire football career, including high school and college
NFL Comparison: Trent Murphy, Washington Redskins
Teams with Need at Position: Washington Redskins, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns
Projection: 2nd round, Early to mid-3rd round
Bottom Line
Although Nassib has only started one season, he’s a smart player. He understands the value of hard work, and will show that to which ever team drafts him; whether that is in the weight room or on the field. Nassib has the talent to become a household name outside of the state of Pennsylvania if paired with the right position coach.
