Texans to release RB Arian Foster

Arian Foster’s run with the Texans is coming to an end as the Texans look to release the former Pro-Bowl running back.

General Manager Rick Smith had previously stated that Foster would not be released for monetary reasons despite his $6.5 million salary for the 2016 season, making this likely a concern over the running back’s health. Foster has missed 23 of the last 48 regular season games due to various injuries since his last full season in 2012. While Foster has been a talented rusher since he exploded onto the scene as an undrafted rookie from Tennessee his lack of availability and the diminished perceived value of running backs in the NFL likely are the contributing factors to Foster’s release.

We wouldn’t expect teams to start lining up for Foster’s services right away. Running backs nearing the age of 30 (Foster is 29, will be 30 when the season starts) are not sought after commodities, especially ones with long injury histories. Expect Foster to find work after the draft, likely with a team that is in the market for a veteran that can contribute but not be relied upon as the bell cow runner. Foster’s best days look to be behind him at this point in his career.

Foster will finish his Texans career with 6,472 yards rushing and 68 total touchdowns in seven seasons with Houston.
