World Cup Announcements: Team Russia World Cup Roster Has The Usual Suspects

Team Russia quickly nailed down all three goaltenders. While none of the three names should be a shock, the competition between the three should be fierce for the starting role. As with seemingly all its international tournaments, Team Russia forwards on paper look to be some of the most talented in the tournament. Interestingly only three defensemen were named to the preliminary roster, one of which is Andrei Markov, the elder statesman of the squad. The big question mark for Team Russia will be can those players named to the blue line handle the best-vs-best format of this two-week tournament.

Up front, the Russians have plenty of firepower, with the NHL’s leading goal scorer in Alex Ovechkin as well as leading rookie point getter Artemi Panarin. They also have proven NHL point producers in Evgeni Malkin, Vladimir Tarasenko, Pavel Datsyuk, and Evgeni Kuznetsov on the roster.

Named to Team Russia are:

G Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets
G Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche
G Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning
D Dmitry Kulikov, Florida Panthers
D Andrei Markov, Montreal Canadiens
D Dmitry Orlov, Washington Capitals
F Artem Anisimov, Chicago Blackhawks
F Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings
F Nikita Kucherov, Tampa Bay Lightning
