Wanderlei Silva Signs With Bellator

Even though he is suspended from active competition in the United States, Pride FC and UFC veteran Wanderlei Silva has signed an exclusive deal with Bellator MMA.

The former Pride FC middleweight champion was released from his UFC contract back in January, after making a public apology for alleging his former employer fixed fights. However, the “Axe Murderer” won’t be eligible to fight in the United States until next year. This is due to a three year suspension that was handed down by the Nevada State Athletic commission after Silva admitted to dodging a random drug test.

Fortunately for Silva, the suspension was made retroactive to May of 2014, when the incident occurred. Meaning he can re-apply for a new license in the state as soon as next year. The 39-year-old was last scene in the cage versus Brian Stann in March of 2013. He won via KO, bringing his career record to 35-12-1.

Bellator MMA has made it a point of bringing in aging, and once retired stars, to front load their shows and draw attention to their cards. It has been a success, judging from the ratings of recent events. The new addition should be a plus towards that strategy, and bouts against the likes of Tito Ortiz, Kimbo Slice and Rampage Jackson are likely to be on the horizon, after spring of next year.

Here is a statement from Bellator MMA on the signing:

Bellator MMA is pleased to announce that one of the most popular, recognizable and beloved fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts, Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva (35-12-1), has signed an exclusive multi-year, multi-fight contract with the promotion. The 39-year-old publicly fielded offers from companies all around the world, but the former Pride FC Middleweight Champion made the decision to take his explosive style to Bellator MMA.
