Toronto Raptors waive Anthony Bennett

Former 1st overall pick Anthony Bennett will now be looking for his fourth team in three years since being drafted in 2013 by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Bennett has struggled mightily in the NBA. Over his 3 seasons he has only played in 128 games out of a possible 246. Bennett is averaging 12.3 minutes, 4.2 points, 0.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game over his three year career. Those stats are obviously not good enough for a 1st overall pick.

With the Raptors this season Bennett has not had much playing time and was sent down for a stint with the Raptors D-League team of Raptors 905. He has played in 19 games for the Raptors, averaging 4.4 minutes, 1.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and ZERO assists per game this season. Yes that is right Bennett didn’t record an assist in his time on the court this season.

There were questions about the Cleveland Cavaliers stunting Bennett’s growth as a player by not giving him much of a chance in his rookie year then sending him out to Minnesota with Andrew Wiggins to get Kevin Love.

There are rumours/reports out there that the Phoenix Suns are interested in Bennett if he clears through waivers which I would expect to happen. If no NBA team signs him, don’t be surprised if Bennett goes and plays for the Raptors 905 of the NBA D-League to develop and gain his confidence back.

The Raptors also announced the signing of veteran power forward/center Jason Thompson. Thompson was recently waived by the Golden State Warriors. The 29-year-old Thompson is averaging 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds in just over six minutes of playing time per game this season.
