Oilers Acquire Patrick Maroon

In a late breaking move, that just got in under the NHL trade deadline, the Edmonton Oilers have acquired Patrick Maroon from the Anaheim Ducks for a 2016 fourth round pick and defenceman Martin Gernat.   The Ducks will retain 25% of Maroon’s salary and $2 million cap hit next season.

Oilers acquire Patrick Maroon

The Oilers have acquired forward Patrick Maroon from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2016 fourth-round pick and Martin Gernat. The Oilers executed the trade late at the NHL Trade Deadline.

Maroon has played 204 NHL games in his career, recording 26 goals and 53 assists for 79 points. He has also recorded 249 career penalty minutes. In the NHL playoffs, Maroon has suited up for 29 games, all with the Ducks, and has 19 points (9-9-18).

Maroon was taken in the sixth round, 161st overall, of the 2007 NHL Draft by Philadelphia. He is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound 27-year-old from St, Louis, MO.

This season, Maroon has played 56 games and has four goals and nine assists.

Ducks Acquire Gernat and 2016 Fourth-Round Pick from Edmonton in Exchange for Maroon

The Ducks have acquired defenseman Martin Gernat and a fourth-round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for left wing Patrick Maroon.

Gernat, 22 (4/11/93), earned three assists (0-3=3) with an even plus/minus rating and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 22 games with Bakersfield, Edmonton’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Selected by Edmonton in the fifth round (122nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Gernat has recorded 5-28=33 points with 72 PIM in 133 career AHL games with Bakersfield and Oklahoma City.

A native of Kosice, Slovakia, Gernat helped the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL) to the 2012 WHL Championship after scoring 7-6=13 points with a +8 rating and eight PIM in 20 playoff games. The 6-4, 202-pound blueliner also led the Oil Kings back to the WHL final in 2013, recording 6-11=17 points with a +16 rating and six PIM in 22 postseason contests.

Maroon, 27 (4/23/88), scored 4-9=13 points with 54 PIM in 56 games with the Ducks this season. Acquired from Philadelphia with David Laliberte in exchange for Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson on Nov. 21, 2010, Maroon has posted 26-53=79 points with 249 PIM in 204 career NHL games.
