Drama, excitement, and suspense – three words that best describe a race at Daytona International Speedway. And the opener for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the PowerShares 300, was no exception.
In qualifying, Richard Childress Racing showed their muscle, and powered Ty Dillon (#3 Bass Pro Shops Chevy) to the pole position. Their team would continue to show their strength during the race, with three out of their four cars taking time leading the pack.
There would be lots of lead changes and close racing throughout the race, after the field got through some early cautions. The biggest of these incidents occurred when Erik Jones (#20 Reser’s Toyota) and Bobby Labonte (#18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota) were collected, two of the early contenders.
Afterwards, the field would last through more than eighty laps of green flag racing, with JR Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, and Team Penske all showing strength throughout. It would prove to be one of the closest and competitive races in the Xfinity Series at Daytona.
With the laps winding down, the JR Motorsports duo of Chase Elliott (#88 TaxSlayer Chevy) and Elliot Sadler (#1 OneMain Financial Chevy) were up front. And as the last lap came, Joey Logano (#22 Discount Tire Ford) would attempt to make a pass on Elliott on the outside, but would get blocked coming down to the finish line. Chase Elliott would come across the line to win the PowerShares 300 at Daytona.
Coming across the line in second on the day would be Joey Logano, and fellow Cup driver Kasey Kahne (#5 Hellmann’s Chevy) would finish third. JR Motorsports drivers would all finish in the Top 10 on the day, while Elliot Sadler would take the series points lead out of Daytona.
Next up for the NASCAR Xfinity Series will be Atlanta Motor Speedway, in a Saturday doubleheader with the Truck Series. Tune in and see the young guns of NASCAR race next Saturday afternoon on FS1.
