Baseball season is right around the corner, and there is no better way to bring in the baseball season than my third installment of the “This One is On Me” series. I have been debating about this one for weeks. Who should I include? How do I limit it to only four players? It’s been a little difficult, but I think I have narrowed it down to the perfect group of players. It ranges from MLB legends to today’s stars. If this is your first time reading this series, I hope you enjoy it and go check out the other two articles featuring NFL and NBA stars. Time to crack open a cold one and bring up the first MLB Star.
- Wade Boggs: This should be a surprise to no one. Boggs knows how to drain some beers and it would be awesome to just hang out with a drinking legend like Boggs. Everyone has heard the story of the time Boggs drank sixty-four beers during a cross country flight while he played for the Boston Red Sox. If you believe some of the rumors about that particular flight, the number is actually in the low 100s. Whether this is true or not, we will probably never know but it doesn’t matter because either number is still legendary. Also, a side note about Boggs is that we share the same birthday so a birthday celebration could be in order.
- Jon Lester: The former Red Sox star admitted to drinking beer in the clubhouse, and I don’t blame him. He indulged on days he didn’t pitch, so I don’t see the problem with it. Hell, I drink a couple while watching baseball games, so why shouldn’t he? Apparently, he also played video games and ate fried chicken, so as far as I’m concerned this makes him a mandatory MLB drinking buddy.
- Babe Ruth: This should also not be a surprise since everyone knows Ruth drank heavily. He’s as necessary to this list as Gronk was to the NFL list. The fact that he is also baseball’s most legendary player makes it that much better. Too bad he is no longer with us; he would have been great to go to a bar and talk baseball with. Ruth would be full of stories from a rough childhood growing up in the early 1900’s and from his days playing baseball for the Red Sox and the Yankees.
- Josh Hamilton: Yeah, I know, he probably shouldn’t go out drinking anymore, but he would still be fun to drink with. As a Cardinals fan, I would probably joke around a little bit with him about the Cards beating the Rangers in the 2011 World Series as well. I also feel like the guy could use a pick me up and someone to talk it out with, so I could be there for him for that. He could use a friend right now, and even though I’m not a friend of his, I understand that.
This sums up my list of MLB stars to drink with. I would love to hear feedback from other baseball fans about who they would choose to drink with and why. Until next time, have a drink on me. Cheers!
