First baseman Ike Davis is expected to make a decision soon on where he might play in the 2016 season, according to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.
Yankees In The Mix For The Services Of Ike Davis
The Yankees appear to be in the mix for the services of Davis and he is likely to accept a minor league deal shortly. After it was announced that the Yankees would be without first baseman Greg Bird, who jumped on the scene last year as a rookie, as he will be out for the season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, the Yankees now find themselves in a desperate search for some much needed depth at first base. There’s no question that Mark Teixeira is clearly the starter, but with his history of injuries and numerous trips to the disabled list, it’s certainly a wise move for the Yankees to find a back up option for first base.
Ever since Ike Davis made his Major League debut with the New York Mets back in 2010, its been no secret that he has not lived up to expectations. The former Mets first baseman has a career batting average of .239 and last year with the Oakland Athletics, Davis hit .229/.301/.350 in 71 games.
Davis, 28, could be a good fit for the Yankees. With the short porch in right field at Yankees Stadium, Davis’ left-handed swing could work well for him.
The Yankees as of this moment, only have Dustin Ackley as their back up first baseman heading into the season. Ackley did play a little first base for the Yankees last season, but he is extremely new to the position. Davis would not only provide much needed insurance, but a steady glove as well.
Brian Cashman has been underrated for finding depth players that always seem to find a way to produce in one way or another for the Yankees and Davis just might be another guy that Cashman could bring aboard to help the team.
