This season, Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side.
The players away on loan are:
- Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), on loan to AS Roma in Serie A
- Carl Jenkinson (RB), on loan to West Ham United in the Premier League
- Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Charlton Athletic in the Championship
- Serge Gnabry (MID), on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League
- Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
- Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
- Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
- Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship
- Emiliano Martínez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
- Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
- Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship
- Stefan O’Connor (DEF), on loan to York City in League Two
- Glen Kamara (MID), on loan to Southend United in League One
- Mathieu Debuchy (RB), on loan to Bordeaux in Ligue 1
In a week in which only two Arsenal loanees won their matches, a Glen Kamara debut for Southend was perhaps the best bit of news. Kamara, a 19-year-old midfielder from Finland, recently made the move to Southend for the remainder of the season. Kamara did make an appearance earlier this season against Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup. Kamara signed for Arsenal in 2012 from Southend, where he now returns on loan to gain some first team experience.
Wojciech Szczęsny started for Roma in their 2-1 win over Sampdoria. Szczęsny made four saves for Roma, and was only denied a clean sheet by a Miralem Pjanić own goal. His brightest moment was preserving the three points by denying Sampdoria’s Antonio Cassano point-blank in stoppage time.
Carl Jenkinson’s loan to West Ham was reportedly terminated following his season ending injury. The right back returns to Arsenal for his rehabilitation.
Yaya Sanogo’s loan with Ajax was terminated last week, and he was then sent out on loan to English Championship side, Charlton Athletic. Sanogo did not play in Charlton’s 1-0 loss to Bristol City. The Arsenal man made only four appearances while at Ajax.
Serge Gnabry did not play in West Brom’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles was an unused substitute as Ipswich lost 1-0 to QPR.
Isaac Hayden started and played the full 90 minutes as Hull lost 1-0 to Burnley. It was a mostly pedestrian performance from Hayden. While he completed 86 percent of his passes, he offered little creativity or on the defensive side of the ball. Chuba Akpom came on as a 76th-minute substitute, but was unable to have any real impact on the match. The loss snapped a four match winning streak for Hull.
Jon Toral started and played 71 minutes as Birmingham lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday. Toral nearly set up a goal, but for a good save from the Sheffield goalkeeper, but had an otherwise poor day. He completed only 65 percent of his passes, and attempted only 17 passes throughout the match.
Emiliano Martínez did not play in Wolves’ 0-0 draw with Reading.
Gedion Zelalem started and played 60 minutes as Rangers drew 0-0 with Kilmarnock in Scottish League Cup action.
Stefan O’Connor did not play in York City’s 2-0 loss to Northampton.
Glen Kamara made his debut for Southend United in their 3-0 win over Colchester. Kamara came on as a half-time substitute.
Mathieu Debuchy made his debut for Bordeaux last Wednesday, starting and playing 80 minutes in a 3-0 loss to Lyon. He followed that by playing the full 90 minutes over the weekend as Bordeaux lost 4-1 to Saint Etienne.
