J.D. Martinez Avoids Arbitration, Clippard Agrees with D-Backs

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a two-year deal with J.D. Martinez. The deal is reportedly worth $18.5 million and will allow the Tigers and Martinez to avoid arbitration over the next two seasons. Additionally, Tyler Clippard agreed to a two-year, $12.5 million deal with Arizona Diamondbacks today.

Martinez, a Miami native, was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 20th round of the 2009 amateur draft. The 28 year-old corner outfielder broke into the Majors with the Astros in 2011, where he spent parts of three seasons. Mediocre offensive performance led to the Astros releasing Martinez following the 2013 season. Martinez joined the Tigers immediately following his release from Houston. Since joining the Tigers organization, Martinez has broken out offensively. In two years in Detroit, Martinez has slashed .296/.350/.543 with 61 home runs and 178 RBIs in only 281 games. Martinez will be a free agent prior to the 2018 season.

Clippard, a two time All-Star, came up with the Yankees, but rose to fame with the Washington Nationals. In seven seasons with the Nats, Clippard established himself as one of the premiere late inning relievers in baseball. Prior to the 2015 season, Clippard was traded to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Yunel Escobar, and was moved again at the trade deadline to the New York Mets. The Kentucky native was instrumental in the Mets’ World Series run this past season. Clippard will receive a signing bonus of $4 million and earn $4.1 million in 2016 and $4.15 million in 2017.
