Gordo, Alabama only has a population of 1600, but has birthed a bloodline that is in position to add to the legacy at the University of Alabama this National Signing Day.
Gordo High School linebacker Ben Davis is the son of Alabama legend Wayne Davis. The elder Davis is the career leader in tackles for the Crimson Tide, recording 327 from 1983-86. Wayne Davis then played several years in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals before returning to Gordo in 2008 to coach basketball and linebackers for the Greenwave. When asked about his decision to return to his hometown, Davis stated to Tuscaloosa.com, “It’s something that I kind of always wanted to do, return home and be able to give back to the community…one of the main reasons I wanted to go the high school level is I have two boys coming up.”
At the time, Ben was just entering middle school, but his father’s pedigree and coaching has turned the younger Davis into the number one inside linebacker in the country.
Growing up the oldest son of an Alabama legend, it’s expect that there is pressure on Ben Davis to follow in his father’s footsteps and enroll 30 mins away in Tuscaloosa. When asked about his father’s influence on his recruiting decision, Davis stated “He’s an alumni of Alabama so of course he’s going to want me to go to Alabama,” Davis went on to state however, that “He [Wayne] lets me do my thing. My recruiting is wide open. He told me wherever I choose, that’s where he’s going to be behind me, him and my Mom. They’ll be behind me 110 percent. I’m glad that I have him to help me out and guide me through the recruitment process.”
