The Chiefs decided to give their Pro-Bowl tight end Travis Kelce a five-year extension that will see him receive a little over $20 million guaranteed on a $46 million contract.
Kelce was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft but didn’t play his rookie season due to surgery on his knee. Since then he has racked up over 800 yards receiving in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. This contract helps secure one of Alex Smith’s go to targets. Add in the extensions to Demetrius Harris and second year tight end James O’Shaughnessy it gives the Chiefs solid depth at the position. The Chiefs have finally appeared to fill the big shoes that were left after future hall of famer Tony Gonzalez left the team in 2009 in hopes of getting a Super Bowl ring. Most believe that they have found this replacement in Travis Kelce.
This is the second big story about Travis Kelce in as many days. It was reported on Thursday that Kelce will star in his own reality dating show “Catching Kelce” that will air on E! sometime later this year. Kelce has an over the top personality that has a way of drawing people to him and that will be showcased with the reality show. The Chiefs hope that this will not be a distraction for them as they try to build their team and continue to move forward in the right direction after a solid 2015 season which saw the team win their first playoff game in 22 years.
Now that they have Kelce locked up the Chiefs will likely switch focus to the defensive side of the ball with several of their defensive stars about to hit Free Agency. These defensive players include Sean Smith, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Eric Berry. The Chiefs have approximately $30 million in cap space to get these players locked up or to add to their team in the off-season.
