Manchester United deny Louis van Gaal resignation

Manchester United have denied that manager Louis van Gaal offered his resignation after the defeat to Southampton on Saturday, reports BBC Sport

It was reported in the Guardian on Monday that the 64-year-old told United’s vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he was prepared to quit the club following the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Old Trafford.

Pressure is building on the Dutchman following a run of just two wins in their last 10 Premier League games and he, along with his players, were booed off the pitch against the Saints in a match which they had just one solitary shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Van Gaal was back on the training ground at Carrington on Tuesday as his side prepare to face Championship outfit Derby County in an FA Cup fourth-round clash as the BBC understands that no discussions took place with Woodward over his resignation.

The hierarchy at United refuse to discuss the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford, who is only halfway through a three-year deal with the North West club. The former Netherlands coach was appointed United boss in May 2014 after a disastrous spell under David Moyes, but despite guiding the club for a 4th-place Premier League finish last season and a return to Champions League football, he has come under heavy criticism for his style of play and results.

Van Gaal has spent over £250 million on transfers since arriving at the club but none of the new arrivals have really delivered under his stewardship.

With Jose Mourinho without a club after being dismissed by Chelsea and Pep Guardiola publicly announcing that he is leaving Bayern Munich this summer, all media eyes are on Old Trafford to see whether the Glazer family will bite the bullet and decide a change is required.

United currently sit 5th in the Premier League and are five points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur.
