The Return of Yoenis Cespedes

Mets Fans, it’s time to rejoice. After an emotional roller coaster of an offseason, the New York Mets have warded off all other suitors and re-signed Yoenis Cespedes. The deal is reportedly worth $75 million over three years with an option for Cespedes to opt out after the 2016 season. Jon Heyman of MLB Network was the first to report the deal via his twitter account.

The Return of Yoenis Cespedes

The Mets orginially acquired Cespedes at the July 31 trade deadline in exchange for minor league pitchers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa. Revitalizing the Mets’ offense, Cespedes exploded for 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in only 57 games. Cespedes was the impact bat that pushed the Mets towards their first NL East title since 2006 and their first NL pennant since 2000.

Reports had indicated that re-signing Yoenis Cespedes would be highly unlikely for the Mets as the 30 year-old slugger was seeking 5-6 years and upwards of $100 million in free agency. Additionally, there were concerns in the front office about the viability of using Cespedes in centerfield. Eventually, the Cuban native’s desire to stay in New York along with the nightmare scenario of Cespedes signing with the division rival Washington Nationals, forced the hand of Sandy Alderson. The re-signing of Cespedes provides a much needed boost for the Mets offense, while legitimizing their position as World Series contenders.
