Arizona Diamondbacks Sign Zack Greinke to Six-Year Deal

Zack Greinke surprisingly signs with the Arizona Diamondbacks for a six-year deal.

The hot stove season just got even crazier as Fox Sports reporter, Ken Rosenthal, has confirmed that the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right handed pitcher, Zack Greinke, to a six-year deal, pending a physical.  Greinke’s salary with the Diamondbacks is reported to be $34.4 million a year, an MLB record. Greinke still had three years and $71 million in base salary left on his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers when he opted out in early November in hopes of landing a lucrative long term deal elsewhere.

The Diamondbacks’ signing of Greinke comes as a surprise, as the two front runners for acquiring Greinke were reported to be the Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.

The Diamondbacks were recently in pursuit of another star pitcher, Kansas City Royals right-hander, Johnny Cueto, who is also free agent.  But Cueto turned down  a six-year, $120 million offer from the Diamondbacks.

Greinke, 32, is coming off a fantastic 2015 season where he finished second in the National League Cy Young voting behind Jake Arrieta.  In 2015, Greinke posted a 1.66 ERA, .844 WHIP, a 9.3 WAR with 200 strikeouts and a 19-3 record in 32 games.  Greinke won the award in 2009 with the Kansas City Royals, and is also a three-time All-Star, a two-time MLB ERA leader (2009, 2015), a two-time Golden Glove award winner (2014, 2015) and a Silver Slugger award winner in 2013.

Greinke has a career 142-93 record, 3.35 ERA and a 1.184 WHIP.  Greinke has also had a good bat to go along with his incredible pitching.  He has a career .220 batting average, with six home runs.  Greinke had a career high batting average of .328 with the Dodgers in 2013, with 19 hits in 58 at-bats.
