Sunderland currently have ten players out on loan. Some with the view to a permanent move, and some with a view to gaining valuable first team experience and the hope of competing for a place in the Sunderland first team squad in the future. Midfielder, Liam Bridcutt, made his debut for Leeds United at QPR and only two players tasted victory in what was a weekend few players will want to remember.
The players currently out on loan are:
Jordan Pickford – Preston North End
Mikael Mandron – Hartlepool United
Martin Smith and George Honeyman – Gateshead
Emanuele Giaccherini – Bologna
Santiago Vergini – Getafe
Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley – Leeds United
Jordan Blinco and Dylan McEvoy – Boston United
Will Buckley did not feature this weekend, however, Liam Bridcutt played the full 90 minutes and was booked in less than ten, as Leeds United lost 1-0 away at Queens Park Rangers. Charlie Austin was the man to score the only goal of the game.
Emanuele Giaccherini was substituted on at 54 minutes as Bologna lost 2-0 away at Torino. Giaccherini’s main contribution to the game came at 39 minutes, when his left-foot shot narrowly missed. Corriere dello Sport revealed recently that the Italy international wants to make his loan move permanent as he feels he will have a better chance of making it into the Italy Euro 2016 squad. If true, Sunderland fans may have seen the last of Giaccherini in a red and white shirt. What sort of fee they will get, if any, when/if he moves on permanent basis is any anyone’s guess at the moment.
Striker, Mikael Mandron, played the full 90 minutes for Hartlepool United, as the side narrowly lost at home to high flyers, Oxford United. A close-fought game saw Hartlepool make Oxford work very hard for their victory. Mandron had an excellent chance at 56 minutes, when he was played through on goal and looked certain to score, but his shot was saved by the legs of the Oxford keeper. Oxford secured the three points with a goal in the 70th minute.
Jordan Pickford once again maintained the goal for Preston as they drew 1-1 away at Fulham. Pickford has been in impressive form so far this season, which has seen him become a regular for the England U21 side. All those at Sunderland are keeping a very close eye on the development of this young and talented goalkeeper.
George Honeyman came on as substitute in the 62nd minute as Gateshead overcame Chester to the tune of 1-0. Honeyman almost made an instant impact when he had a chance on the edge of the area, but his shot was too high. An own goal sealed the three points for Gateshead later in the game, though. Martin Smith was an unused substitute.
Both Dylan McEvoy and Jordan Blinco played as Boston were sent crashing out of the FA Trophy, 1-0 away at Solihull Moors. Boston dominated for much of the game but could not find a way to leave with a victory and remain in the competition. McEvoy played the full 90 minutes, whilst Blinco was substituted at 82 minutes.
Santiago Vergini did not feature for Getafe.
