Canadiens Recall Sven Andrighetto from AHL

Sven Andrighetto scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the St. John’s Ice Caps to a win over the Syracuse Crunch tonight.  After the game was over though, his night got a whole lot better, as the Montreal Canadiens recalled the 22-year-old forward to the NHL.

Andrighetto sits third on the Ice Caps in scoring with six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 17 AHL games this season. He was the Habs 3rd round pick, 86th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Andrighetto made his NHL debut for the Habs last season, playing in 12 games and registering two goals and one assist.

It will be interesting to see if the Swiss forward is given an opportunity to play right wing with Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller. The Canadiens have tried a number of players in that spot, with limited success thus far this season. Andrighetto could be the offensive spark that the line is looking for.

To make room for the move, the Canadiens placed Torrey Mitchell on the injured reserve list. Mitchell suffered a lower body injury in Thursday night’s game against the Arizona Coyotes.

The Canadiens defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 in their first ever game in Barclay’s Arena in Brooklyn. The same two teams will play again on Sunday, this time with the game taking place in Montreal.
