Jose Reyes Arrested on Halloween

Daniel O’Leary of the NY Daily News reported that four-time All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested on Halloween in Hawaii. According to reports, the alleged assault took place at the Four Seasons Hualalai after an argument in a hotel room. Reyes allegedly pulled Katherine Reyes (wife) off of the bed in their room, grabbed her by the throat, and then shoved her into the sliding glass door that led to the balcony. Security called the police after the incident, leading to the arrest.

It has been reported that Katherine was taken to the emergency room. She sustained injuries to her thigh, neck, and wrists. Reyes, who started his career with the National League Champion New York Mets, was traded from the first place Toronto Blue Jays to the last place Colorado Rockies during the season.

Reyes’ arrest comes right after Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached an agreement in July that allows the commissioner to take action even if a player is not yet convicted, but is merely accused of certain crimes, such as domestic violence.  The timing could not be worse, as the news came right after the release of the gruesome photos of Cowboy’s defensive lineman Greg Hardy’s ex-girlfriend, whom Hardy was accused of beating in 2014.

Ironically, Reyes was the 2012 winner of the Charlie Hough Good Guy Award, an award voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America that represents a positive relationship with reporters. Reyes and his agent declined to make any comments on the allegations thus far. The Colorado Shortstop is currently out on bail according to Chelsea Davis of Hawaii News Now.

Jose Reyes is a two time Lou Brock Award winner (NL Stolen Base leader), and a Silver Slugger Award (NL) winner. Reyes was brought up in the same Mets rookie class as David Wright, whom he played with for nine out of his thirteen seasons. Reyes signed a six year, $106,000,000 deal with the Miami Marlins in the 2011 off-season before being dealt to the Blue Jays. Reyes is due to make a base salary of $22,000,000 in 2016.
