They did it again. The Dallas Stars earned yet another win Saturday night, scoring five times against a talented San Jose squad.
Dallas now sits in first place in the Western Conference, all thanks to a little bit of comebacks, and a whole lot of offense.
Stars offense, comebacks push team to top
The offense has been crafted around Stars’ captain Jamie Been, who has tallied nine goals and 17 total points, leading the NHL in both of those categories.
However, he has been getting some help. Tyler Seguin is tied for the NHL lead with 10 assists, topping Benn’s eight.
Then you keep going down the list and find Jason Spezza, Patrick Sharp, and Cody Eakin, all guys that are more than capable of putting the puck in the net.
Vernon Fiddler, who scored Saturday, said, “There are going to be nights when it is high alert on [the top line] and we’ve got to find scoring throughout the lineup. We’ve found the way to do that the last couple years and I think that is one of the strengths of our team. It’s always nice to contribute.”
The roster mixes the added experience from the offseason with the young guns we saw in the playoffs last year, and it might just be the best combination in the league.
The team has shown an extensive “never quit” attitude already this season. Two weeks ago, on the road against Florida, Dallas gave up two goals in the first three minutes of the period, to go down 2-0. Both Seguin and Benn scored twice to earn the Stars the win.
After the game, Stars head coach Lindy Ruff said, “I just liked the desperation [in the game].”
Fast forward ten days and the Stars find themselves down 3-0 in the first period against a struggling Anaheim team. Dallas battled back, scoring three goals of their own in the second period, and another late in the third to beat the Ducks 4-3.
Of course, the Stars offense improved to 9-2-0 after beating San Jose 5-3 on Saturday behind Patrick Sharp’s 4th goal in three games. The Stars travel to Toronto on Monday.
