The NHL’s 3-on-3 overtime has already in this young season produced some incredibly exciting plays, but last night’s sequence on the Los Angeles Kings game-winning goal against the Nashville Predators might be the best yet.
MUST SEE: Doughty, Carter Combine to Beat Preds
The play starts with a 3-on-1 crossing the Kings blueline with Drew Doughty the only player back for the Kings. As Preds forward Mike Fisher attempts a pass over the Colin Wilson on the other side, Doughty showed why he’s considered a top-five blueliner in the world, swatting the puck out of mid-air before corralling it and sending a pass up ice to Jeff Carter.
“Really, [Carter] had the whole ice in front of him,” Doughty said after the game. “The slowest guy on our team still would have gotten that breakaway. But he made the read. It’s either going to be a goal going at our net, 3-on-1. He made the read to stay up there.”
Carter, one of the team’s top snipers, made no mistake with less than 20 seconds left in the extra frame, faking the shot and bringing Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne to his stomach before roofing the puck for the winner, much to the delight of the Staples Center crowd.
The win pushed the Kings to the top of the Pacific Division with a 7-3-0 record. Despite the loss, Nashville has now collected points in six straight games to sit with a 7-1-2 record, just two points behind the Dallas Stars in the Central Division with a game in hand.
