The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has some of the closest and hardest racing in all three of the nationally touring series. Add that on top of the excitement of coming to Talladega Superspeedway, and you have the perfect recipe for a crazy race on a Saturday afternoon.
In qualifying earlier in the morning, the driver who drove from deep in the field to win at Talladega last year wouldn’t have to come quite as far to get to the front this time. Timothy Peters (#17 Toyota) would claim the top spot, with John Wes Townley (#05 Zaxby’s Chevy) alongside.
As expected, tight and crazy pack racing was seen throughout the day. While Peters would start on pole, championship contenders Matt Crafton (#88 Menards Toyota) and Erik Jones (#4 Toyota) would make their way to the front quickly and battle at the top. Meanwhile, the brother of a Sprint Cup Series champion Brian Keselowski (#29 Cooper Standard Ford) provided cheers by running in the top five throughout the race, only to run out of fuel with two laps to go.
Wrecking was not in the cards early in the race, with only a handful of single truck incidents causing cautions. John Hunter Nemechek (#8 Toyota) would spin across the grass before the first round of pit stops, while Terry Jones (#30 Chevy) and Stanton Barrett (#91 Chevy) would each have hard contact into the wall in separate incidents. However, the big one was looming for the trucks and came with just four laps to go, taking out over half a dozen competitors on the backstretch, including the dominant truck on the day, Matt Crafton.
The big one would set up one final green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Spencer Gallagher (#23 Allegiant Travel Chevy) gave a big push to Timothy Peters to pass Brandon Jones (#33 Chevy) for the lead. Then, Gallagher set his sights on the lead, only to crash with John Wes Townley. The race would end under caution, and Timothy Peters would win the Freds 250 at Talladega.
Coming across the line in second would be Brandon Jones, and third would be Mason Mingus (#15 Call 811 Chevy) with his best career finish. Title contenders Erik Jones and Tyler Reddick (#19 BBR Music Ford) would come home in fourth and fifth. They would capitalize on Matt Crafton’s crash and pull away from him in the championship hunt.
After the high speed pack action of Talladega, the Camping World Truck Series heads to the beating and banging next week at Martinsville Speedway. See all the action next Saturday afternoon on FS1.
