Alexander Ovechkin’s goal 30 seconds into the second period of Tuesday’s game between the Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames not only broke a 1-1 tie, but made him the 104th player in NHL history to record 900 career points.

The goal, assisted by Brooks Orpik and Evgeny Kuznetsov, opened the floodgates for the Capitals, who went on to score twice more in the second period en route to a 6-2 win over the Flames.
Ovechkin, now on 901 career points after adding another assist in the game, sits 9th among active players (and 103rd all-time) in points. Several other active players are within his sights for this season, with Shane Doan at 902 points, Brad Richards at 906 and Henrik Sedin at 917. Ovechkin is also aiming to score his 500th career goal at some point this year, currently sitting at 479 (4th among active players, and 50th all-time). At just 30 years old, Ovechkin is expected to jump up the list quickly over the next few seasons.
With just 764 games played, Ovechkin has become the fastest player since Jaromir Jagr to achieve the 900-point milestone.

After the win against Calgary, Ovechkin told reporters, “It’s a huge milestone. I have to thank my teammates. It’s hard to do by yourself in this league”. As Washington’s captain, he is under pressure to perform this season and lead his team on a deep playoff run, with a lack of success in recent years.
