America’s heartland – the breadbasket of America, and a safe harbor for so much of the sporting world this weekend. With the Major League Baseball postseason continuing this weekend in Kansas City, NASCAR is also making it’s presence known in KC with the Kansas Lottery 300 at the nearby Kansas Speedway.
In qualifying earlier in the day on Saturday, Matt Kenseth (#20 Reser’s Toyota) was in control and took the pole ahead of NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Chris Buescher (#60 Advocare Ford). Buescher would be looking to add to his lead in the championship, while Kenseth wanted to only win.
As the race got underway, Kenseth was in a league of his own. He would be untouched at the front, lapping up through much of the field, leaving only fifteen cars on the lead lap by halfway. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch looked to be the only car that was even close to challenging his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.
Once the race wore past halfway, Busch would catch up with Kenseth thanks to some adjustments on some pit stops and an incredible rally through the field after a pit road penalty. With thirty laps to go, Busch and Kenseth would engage in an extensive battle for the lead, going side-by-side lap after lap. Busch would take the lead with fifteen laps to go, but a caution for the sputtering Joey Gase (#52 Donate Life Chevy) with five laps left would set up one final deciding restart.
On the final restart, as drivers like Brian Scott (#2 Shore Lodge Chevy) and Austin Dillon (#33 Ruud Chevy) ran out of fuel, Kyle Busch drove away and got the win in the Kansas Lottery 300. Matt Kenseth would come home in second, and fellow Cup driver Joey Logano in third.
With only three races left in the Xfinity Series season, Chris Buescher will take a 27-point lead in the championship to Texas Motor Speedway over Chase Elliott (#9 NAPA Chevy). Catch the action from Texas two weeks from now on your local NBC station.
