Must See: 2015 Montreal Canadiens Home Opener Ceremony

Sports Illustrated writer Michael Farber has a famous quote about the various ceremonies that the Montreal Canadiens have done over the years.

Last night for the team’s home opener, they proved it again in a 20-minute ceremony to open the 2015-16 campaign.

The Canadiens were playing their first home game after going 4-0 on the road. They would go on to defeat the New York Rangers by a score of 3-0, to go 5-0-0 to start a season for the first time in franchise history. The Canadiens have gone 4-0-0 to start the year three times previously, and won the Stanley Cup at the conclusion of each of those seasons.

“Everybody’s pitching in, everybody’s having fun and everyone feels good about themselves,” team captain Max Pacioretty said. “People ask me about leadership and how I feel about that; that’s the biggest thing that I’m happy about right now, that everybody feels good about their game and everybody’s got confidence right now.”

Carey Price made 25 saves for his 35th career shutout. Amazingly, seven of those 35 shutouts have come against the New York Rangers. The shutout also moves Price ahead of Bill Durnan for the fourth most shutouts in team history.

“Whenever you play a really good team, you know you have to bring your best effort to win,” Price said. “Once again, the Rangers played very well. That’s an excellent hockey club over there. We have a lot of respect for that team and their abilities. They probably feel the same about us. In the future, I’m sure there’ll be a lot more great hockey games between our teams.”

Tomas Fleischmann, Dale Weise and Tomas Plekanec had the goals for the Habs. Montreal’s next game comes on Saturday night against another original six rival in the Detroit Red Wings.
