History was made last night, as Edmonton Oilers rookie sensation Connor McDavid scored his first NHL goal on Tuesday night. McDavid tipped in a point shot from Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera at 12:18 of the second period, beating Dallas Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen to tie the game up at two.
Like Wayne Gretzky, McDavid got his first NHL goal in his third NHL game. The pair also have the team they scored the goal for in common. McDavid has garnered so much hype in Edmonton, so far since training camp when he made headlines for scoring five goals at the rookie camp scrimmage. Whether he lives up to that hype of being the first overall pick, and a generational player, this season remains to be seen.
“He is already better than me,” says Lightning forward Steven Stamkos on what he thought about McDavid.
McDavid became the second player on Tuesday night from the 2015 NHL draft to score his first NHL goal, the other one being Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres.

The Stars, powered by a Jason Spezza hat trick would win the game by a final score of 4-2. The Oilers fall to 0-3-0 on the young NHL season.
“It’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” McDavid said after the game. “But like you said, obviously, not the way you want to end that game but pretty special to get it right away.”
