Patrice Bergeron awarded a Globie for Bruins MVP

Patrice Bergeron can add another piece of hardware to his collection, as the 30 year-old forward was voted the Bruins most valuable player by The Boston Globe, in which he received the first ever “Globie” given to a Bruins player.

The Bruins MVP Award featured five candidates – Calgary Flame’s defenseman Dougie Hamilton, Brad Marchand, Loui Eriksson, Tuukka Rask and the MVP himself, Patrice Bergeron. Although Bergeron should be proud of receiving this award, there certainly hasn’t been any shortage of recognition of Bergeron’s success in his career.

Here is a list of all of Bergeron’s accomplishments to date:

  • Won gold in IIHF World Championship in 2004
  • Won gold and MVP in IIHF World Championship in 2005
  • Won gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics
  • Won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011
  • Won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2012
  • Won the Spengler Cup in 2012
  • Won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2013
  • Won gold in the 2014 Winter Olympics
  • Won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2014
  • Won the NHL Foundation Player Award in 2014
  • Cover of EA Sports NHL15
  • Won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2015
  • Won a Globie for Bruins MVP by the Boston Globe in 2015

One of Bergeron’s most impressive accomplishments is winning the Frank J. Selke Trophy three times – and many people have a feeling he’s not done yet. The Selke Trophy first made its appearance in 1977 where it was awarded to Canadiens legend Bob Gainey. Gainey has the record for most Selke Trophy wins – managing to capture the Selke for four consecutive seasons. It’s not far-fetched to say that Bergeron has a very good chance at breaking Gainey’s record, where he would have to be awarded with at least five Selke Trophies. At 30 years-old and three Selke trophies, I’d say he’s still got a left in him.

Additionally, another Boston-based hockey player received a Globie – however this player currently resides in Buffalo, New York. The award for Top College Athlete was given to recently-drafted Buffalo Sabre Jack Eichel. Eichel will be playing his first NHL season this year, so his resume doesn’t stand-out like Bergeron’s…yet. But as Darth Vader would say, “the force is strong with this one.” Jack Eichel has the potential of being an elite player in the NHL. Watch out, Bergeron – Eichel might be coming for your Selke’s the same way he was “coming for” Buffalo months before being drafted.
