MLS Power Rankings 06 October 2015
RANK | TEAM | COMMENTS | Last 6 | Previous | Change |
1 | New York Red Bulls |
The Red Bulls shook off the embarrasing home loss to Orlando with a thorough win at home over a playoff team. All in all, good show. Defensive depth might be the talking point, but Connor Lade rebounding with a dominant performance over one of the best offensive players in the league is what really stood out. | 4-2-0 | 2 | +1 |
2 |
FC Dallas |
Dallas with Mauro Diaz is so good. Without him, they just aren’t the same. If he can stay healthy, I look forward to seeing how this season shakes out for them. | 4-2-0 | 10 | +8 |
3 |
LA Galaxy |
LA let Seattle off the hook. Road wins have been so rare for the Galaxy this year that it really makes you question whether or not they can get it done in the playoffs. It will take some huge performances at home, which they are more than capable off, to go deep. I don’t think LA has what it takes to win the shield, so if they do get to MLS Cup, can they win it on the road? | 3-2-1 | 1 | -2 |
4 |
Montreal Impact |
Montreal was flying high and may have been a bit hard done with their loss in Orlando. Now to turn it around quickly and take on New York and Colorado on the road on short rest. Yikes. The good news? The Red Bulls have struggled with teams that play like the Impact this year, so aiming for 4 points is totally within reason. | 3-1-2 | 4 | 0 |
5 |
Orlando City SC |
Hottest team in the league right now. Pretty crazy if you think about how dreadful they were just a month ago. The wheel of MLS turns, and you never know what you are going to get. Just barely clutching onto a possible shot at the playoffs. If Montreal slips up, maybe, just maybe, Orlando can sneak in. | 4-1-1 | 8 | +3 |
6 | Seattle Sounders FC |
How do I know the Sounders still aren’t quite back? They are celebrating a last minute draw at home against one of the worst road teams in MLS. Still, staying unbeaten in 5 is encouraging. | 3-1-2 | 6 | 0 |
7 |
Toronto FC |
Toronto is so close to qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in team history. They are playing well enough to do it, but weary TFC fans have been here before. 2 points is all the need from their final 3. The kicker? They are playing NY, Columbus, and Montreal over the final weeks. Of course, Orlando would have to win out (NYCFC and Philly) for that even to be possible, and that is crazy, right? Hold on tight! | 3-3-0 | 11 | +4 |
8 |
Vancouver Whitecaps FC |
Whitecaps had the largest two week shift of any team this year. Voters boosted the rank, but I’m not sold on the Whitecaps over the last month. Maybe this is just a short lull before the playoffs? | 2-3-1 | 18 | +10 |
9 |
Real Salt Lake |
Speaking of miracles, RSL is just barely hanging on in the playoff race, but with their final games against Portland, Dallas, and Seattle, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. They are finishing the year strong, but the offseason will be tumultous me thinks. | 4-2-0 | 14 | +5 |
10 |
New England Revolution |
New England is stumbling ever so slightly right now. Their 6-game win streak looked great, and now they haven’t won in 3. Weird coincidence time, last time they went on a winless run, what team did they beat just before it started? What do the Red Bulls do to New England? | 3-2-1 | 3 | -7 |
11 |
Columbus Crew SC |
They are a potent team offensively, but their defense betrays them. Factor in Trapp’s abscence and this team just doesn’t stack up as strong. Defensive mistakes and poor passing killed the Crew in Harrison. They will need to button that up come playoff time. | 3-3-0 | 5 | -6 |
12 |
Houston Dynamo |
The loss to Dallas was excruciating for the Dynamo who looked like they might challenge for a spot in the playoffs. Not out of the question just yet, but boy did they take a mean punch last weekend. | 3-3-0 | 12 | 0 |
13 |
New York City FC |
City looked like they were on their way to embarrasing DC at home and a fourth straight victory. Instead they burned out and dropped all three points. Next season should be better though, right? | 3-3-0 | 13 | 0 |
14 |
Sporting Kansas City |
SKC managed to get a draw with reserves, win the US Open Cup, and win in Portland all in the same week. Not bad at all. Their league form leaves something to be desired, but the win did enough to keep them out of the fire for now. | 2-2-2 | 7 | -7 |
15 |
Philadelphia Union |
Some bad luck and lack of offense did the Union in North of the border. Big changes are coming to the Union after the big front office change last week. Not sure I expect Curtain to make it another season, but I also don’t think the current mess is his fault. | 2-3-1 | 9 | -6 |
16 |
San Jose Earthquakes |
A big point in Vancouver for the Earthquakes. I was sure they would make the playoffs a month ago. I’m alot less sure of that now. They are above the red line for now, but teams below with games in hand make it a precarious position. | 1-2-3 | 15 | -1 |
17 |
Portland Timbers |
If Portland miss the playoffs this year, they have no one to blame but themselves. You have to win at home down the stretch if you want to contend for the Cup, and Portland’s finishing makes that nearly impossible. | 1-3-2 | 16 | -1 |
18 |
DC United |
The comeback win probably did some good things for a team that had looked beaten in the last month. Sure the win came against NYCFC, but a win is a win. | 1-4-1 | 19 | +1 |
19 |
Colorado Rapids |
Colorado’s been in a state of arrested development for well over a year now. They looked so promising with a ton of young talent and a club legend at the helm, but it just hasn’t materialized. Change is coming, but not sure how wide reaching it will be. There is something to be said for patience when you have young players, but if they aren’t playing… | 1-4-1 | 17 | -2 |
20 |
Chicago Fire |
Chicago’s win should see them higher in the list, but it is one of the few bright spots this season for fans of the once great team. There is some promise there, and a lot of pieces to build on. This might be a simple trim the fat situation. Oh, and playing your most talented playmaker as THE central playmaker helps too. | 1-5-0 | 20 | 0 |
