Sunday Social: Blurred Lines – October 4th
Just when we thought the college football season was coming into focus – what with Arizona State done for, UCLA surging in the west, TCU’s defense in shambles, Ole Miss in control down south, and Georgia asserting itself as Alabama is in their decline. Heck, Alabama came into Saturday’s game as an underdog for the first time in 73 games. That’s five-and-half seasons.
Well, what we thought was a season coming into focus turned to blurred lines last night. Arizona State pummeled UCLA in the Rose Bowl, as our our @TonyBruin witnessed. Alabama dismantled Georgia between the hedges. TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma all looked dominant. Ohio State, Michigan State and Florida State all struggled.
With that said, let’s look at the social media reactions to all of yesterday’s drama in our weekly series.
Sunday Social: Blurred Lines
It all started early, with Penn State expecting to continue building positive momentum against an outmatched Army team. Many fans weren’t happy with a 20-14 win that was only secured in the final minute. #WeAre twitterer @RinkNeedsBeer put this shaky performance in historical perspective:
20-14 over Army would be acceptable … if this was 50 years ago. #ARMYvsPSU

Just after that, Michigan State barely survived Purdue, generally considered one of the worst teams in the nation. Do you think that maybe Mark Dantonio’s phones were tapped this week? (h/t @BlaineJacob)
Dantonio looks like the mob boss that drove his own Cadillac to finish someone off #PURvsMSU pic.twitter.com/Fa1564oxbb

And Big 10 fans were enjoying having two of the top rated teams in the nation – at least coming into the weekend. But after Michigan State and Ohio State scored less than impressive wins, @tcrouse reminds us that sometimes it’s not far from the bird house to the out house.
Numbers 1 and 2 look mostly like number 2 today. #OSUvsIND #PURvsMSU

Speaking of Purdue and Indiana, and throwing in Notre Dame’s result from later in the evening, yesterday could have been a banner day for the major football programs in the state of Indiana. Instead, it was just another reminder to Hoosiers that basketball season starts in less than a month. (h/t @mesobunny)

But Hoosiers didn’t have the worst day. That honor probably goes to Texas fans, for the second or third time this season (remember losing on a missed extra point?) It was so bad that backup cornerback Kris Boyd retweeted this Texas A&M troll tweet. Which would have been bad enough, even if it didn’t happen at half time. Of his own game. That’s a bold strategy, Cotton.
You can try and see it for yourself here @kris23db but you won’t have much success. My guess is his twitter account isn’t the only think that’s locked up right now.
Updated score: @dannyboy_9161 7, Charlie Strong 6. Missed extra point is the difference, of course.
It’s bad enough when players are ashamed, but when your masket starts wearing the grocery bag, you know its time to worry. @tedxas got this photo from the field level on Saturday:

It’s pretty bad when players are retweeting troll tweets at half time of blow out losses. There’s got to be some worry in Austin. In fact, @beforefamepics thinks they’ve already given up in Longhorn country:

Enough picking on Texas, let’s move on to afternoon games.
Alabama was an underdog for the first time in 73 games. That must have not sat well with the Crimson Tide as they went into Athens and dismantled Georgia. Sad fans is a meme that’s so last season. But you know what’s in this season? Sad mascot memes. And it doesn’t get any sadder than Uga yesterday:

That’s one Damn Sad Dawg. You can bet Mark Richt will be in the doghouse with Georgia fans this week. Which reminds us of one of the great sports radio call-ins ever. The crying Georgia fan. Enjoy.
Thanks to our main man @LWOS_JB3 for bringing this out of the closet.
And across the SEC, Florida struck down Ole Miss in Old Testament style. Real fire and brimstone stuff. During the week, the flu bug went through the Florida locker room faster than an STD across the Rutgers campus. No worries though, it just added to the growing legend of Will Grier. (h/t @hsb03)

And I’m just going to leave this @hannahgrace421 contribution right here.
Pretty much describes how the whole game went 😥 😆🐊🐊🐊#MISSvsUF pic.twitter.com/obI07RErnO

I suppose this game was like being in an episode of Oz for the Ole Miss team. Apropos for such a shocker of a game.
And in the night cap, Arizona State went into the Rose Bowl and capitalized on UCLA’s stinker of a game.
Who knew that Arizona State fans had such troll game. Nice work @alli1234567!

Oh my, Sun Devil fans are good at this social media thing. First they go after the Bruin quarterback and then go after the head coaches dad. Bruhhhh-tal. More nice work @bdubesq!

Another great and dramatic week in college football where the lines between logic and reality and chaos and confusion have been blurred again.
What do you say we do it all again next week?
