MLS Power Rankings 30 September 2015
RANK | TEAM | COMMENTS | Last 6 | Previous | Change |
| LA Galaxy | The league is on notice. The Galaxy attack has woken from their slumber. The result may have come at home where the Galaxy have been nearly unstoppable all season, but leading the table pushes you up the list. | 3-2-1 | 3 | +2 |
| New York Red Bulls | Something tells me that the Red Bulls will want to forget last weekend. Temporary stumble or the start of the collapse? Jesse Marsch is suspended and the last time the Red Bulls played under Dennis Hamlet, they beat the Revs so bad it knocked them out of their summer slump! | 3-3-0 | 1 | -1 |
| New England Revolution | Speaking of the Revs, like the last time they beat the Red Bulls at home, there was a mild cooling period for the previously red hot team. Not getting a result against Philly probably stings, but Chicago might be a nice palate cleanser. | 4-1-1 | 2 | -1 |
| Montreal Impact | Montreal is finishing strong. Some may have questioned firing Klopas while the Impact were still in the playoff hunt, but it looks to be paying dividends. It also doesn’t hurt the Drogba is tearing up the league. Getting hot at the right time is everything in MLS. | 4-0-2 | 16 | +12 |
| Columbus Crew SC | Columbus has been impressive all season, but three tough games await them to finish up the year starting with a trip to Red Bull Arena. They are still challenging for first in the East, but need to finish perfect to get there. | 4-2-0 | 6 | +1 |
| Seattle Sounders FC | Like sleeping LA, Seattle is back. Oba and Clint back together is certainly helping the cause, but the most important piece is Ozzie. | 3-1-2 | 8 | +2 |
| Sporting Kansas City | If I were the only one voting, KC would be way down the list. Horrible run of form from them each of the last two years to end the season. Getting a draw with their B squad should feel like a victory, but too many teams are breathing down their neck. | 1-3-2 | 19 | +12 |
| Orlando City SC | Huge win for the purple people. The speed of their attack can overwhelm teams. They have an outside shot at the playoffs, but it will be an up hill struggle. | 3-2-1 | 18 | +10 |
| Philadelphia Union | The Union should be proud of the work they put in over the last month. May even get their first taste of silverware tonight. Season is all but over, but looking forward doesn’t seem nearly as grim as it did in April. | 3-2-1 | 11 | +2 |
| FC Dallas | Dallas only seems to do things in streaks this year. Three straight wins have now followed three straight losses. Still a good bet to finish top two in the West and might well sneak the top spot thanks to games in hand. | 3-3-0 | 4 | -6 |
| Toronto FC | When Toronto’s offense gets going, they are a pleasure to watch. Their defense isn’t going to win them any games though. Still, coming from behind and winning is a strong statement for TFC. Chicago seems like a good team to fall on the sword this year. | 3-3-0 | 14 | +3 |
| Houston Dynamo | Houston is very close to that final playoff spot, but I’m not sure I would book their tickets. For one, San Jose is above them and is playing better at the moment, and Houston has been the least consistent team all year. Tough games ahead against Dallas, Seattle, and Vancouver. Two out of three one the road. Orange you glad we didn’t say playoffs? | 3-3-0 | 13 | +1 |
| New York City FC |
Since Jason Kreis made that infamous post-game comment about his team’s commitment, they have been playing pretty darn well. The old men have started to make an impact, and they have a solid young core. It might not be this year, but City is showing that the moth is starting to emerge from its cocoon. | 3-3-0 | 20 | +7 |
| Real Salt Lake | Salt Lake probably feels hard done losing on a goal that probably shouldn’t have counted, but let’s be honest, they were second best on the night. If RSL was going to make a serious run to the playoffs, they needed 3 points at home to a Conference opponent also in the hunt. Like Houston, it might take a miracle. | 3-3-0 | 15 | +1 |
| San Jose Earthquakes | San Jose has had some rough goings after looking like a lock to make the playoffs. I still think they can do it. October 17th vs KC is going to be a must watch. | 2-2-2 | 7 | -8 |
| Portland Timbers | Gut check time for the Timbers. First test passed with a big result on the road. Bigger shock, Timbers losing at home to the Red Bulls or winning on the road at Columbus? I’m not sure but both are wacky results. Three of their next four games are against other struggling teams. It’s now or never. | 2-2-2 | 10 | -6 |
| Colorado Rapids | After winning three in a row, Colorado has now lost 3 of their last 4. Is it time to get minutes for the young guys yet? If the Rapids want to be the team of the future, that starts now. | 2-3-1 | 9 | -8 |
| Vancouver Whitecaps FC | What is going on with the Whitecaps? Were they hard done by a penalty? Sure. But just like RSL, they didn’t do enough to win the game and put themselves under pressure. Vancouver looked like they were making a run at the Supporters Shield, then dropped 4 of 6 starting with the heart breaker in KC. Is that game haunting them now? | 2-4-0 | 5 | -13 |
| D.C. United | D.C. has the same record as Chicago in their last 6 games. Let that sink in for a moment. | 0-5-1 | 12 | -7 |
| Chicago Fire | Chicago has won 4 games since May 30th. Two of those games are against Dallas and New York Red Bulls. I give up. | 0-5-1 | 17 | -3 |
