The St. Louis Cardinals who have been besieged by injuries of late, are about to get their ace starting pitcher back. Adam Wainwright is set to return to the team on Wednesday. The Cardinals who own the best record in MLB at 99-58, will have their right-handed ace back in time for the post-season.
Wainwright was cleared by the doctors to return to the field on Tuesday. The team says Wainwright could come out of the bullpen as early as Wednesday, when the Cardinals finish up their series with their NL Central rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Adam Wainwright will work exclusively out of the Cardinals bullpen. Ironically, the last time Wainwright worked out of the bullpen was in the 2006 post-season. Wainwright pitched 9 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out 15 hitters and recording four saves en route to helping the Cardinals capture a World Series title. This is something the Cardinals hope they can repeat with Wainwright during the post-season.
In four outings this season, Adam Wainwright is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA over 25 innings with 18 strikeouts and three walks. Wainwright has made 63 career relief appearances while posting a 3.39 ERA over 77 innings with 72 strikeouts and 23 walks in the appearances he has made out of the bullpen.
In unrelated news, Adam Wainwright’s teammate, Stephan Piscotty, was released from the hospital just one day after a scary collusion with his fellow teammate Peter Bourjos.
“Piscotty could play before the regular season ends, depending how he feels,” general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday. “Cleared neurological exams, slight concussion.”
The St. Louis Cardinals said all the test conducted on on Piscotty came back negative, and all that he has is a bruise on his head.
Mike Matheny, the Cardinals manager, said Tuesday that Piscotty was released from the hospital with “a couple of bruises, but overall everything checked out very clean.”
