Eight Arsenal loanees made appearances this weekend, in a poor weekend results-wise. Only Dan Crowley and Gedion Zelalem’s teams managed to pick up wins, with six other loanees taking part in draws. It’s been an encouraging opening month for Zelalem, whose performance was the highlight of the weekend, as is becoming the norm.
While Yaya Sanogo’s lack of minutes for Ajax is no longer a surprise to anyone, Arsenal will likely be disappointed by the continued lack of minutes Tony Pulis has seen fit to give on-loan Serge Gnabry. Gnabry has looked bright in limited minutes for West Brom so far this season, making just one league appearance and two in Cup ties. Gnabry was again an unused substitute for West Brom in their 3-2 loss to Everton on Monday.
Carl Jenkinson played 90 minutes for West Ham in their 2-2 draw against Norwich. The Arsenal right-back nearly set up the winner with a ball into the box in the 90th minute, and put in a solid defensive performance for the home side.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles played 71 minutes as Ipswich drew 2-2 with Bristol City. Starting on the right wing, Maitland-Niles created a couple of chances from out wide, while attempting seven crosses.
Chuba Akpom went the full 90 for Hull City in their 1-1 draw against Blackburn. The Arsenal man attempted four shots, but failed to put a single one on target. Akpom was tidy in possession, completing 91 percent of his passes. Fellow Arsenal loanee Isaac Hayden was an unused substitute.
Dan Crowley came on in the 71st minute and helped Barnsley preserve their 2-0 lead as they beat Gillingham 2-0 in League One.
Jon Toral played the first 62 minutes of Birmingham’s 2-0 defeat against Rotherham United. Toral was lively, forcing one save and putting another shot wide, while creating one chance in the first half and completing 87 percent of his passes, the majority of them coming in the attacking half.
Emiliano Martinez made his second consecutive start for Wolves, as they drew 1-1 with Preston North End. Martinez conceded an early goal, and was forced into only one save the rest of the game in the draw.
Wellington Silva started and played 71 minutes as Bolton drew 2-2 with Brighton. Wellington forced two saves in the first half, before nearly setting up the equalizer early in the second half.
Gedion Zelalem recorded yet another assist for Rangers in the Scottish Championship. Zelalem found James Tavernier on the break for Rangers third goal in a 4-0 victory over Morton. It was another quality performance for the Arsenal youngster as Rangers kept their perfect league start intact, bouncing back from a midweek Cup loss. The statistics certainly suggest that Zelalem is having the best season among Arsenal loanees, though the question of whether that is down to level of competition certainly exists. Nonetheless, it’s been an encouraging opening month for Zelalem.
