After signing a professional try-out contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs back on September 10th 2015, Brad Boyes signed a one-year deal with the Leafs Sunday afternoon. Boyes will reportedly be making $700,000 this upcoming season.
Brad Boyes was originally drafted by the Leafs 24th overall in the 2000 NHL entry draft, before he was included in a blockbuster trade in 2002 in which the Toronto Maple Leafs sent him, Alyn McCauley and a first round pick which turned into Mark Stuart to the Sharks for Owen Nolan.
The 33-year-old Mississauga, Ontario is coming off a campaign where he scored 14 goals and 38 points in 78 games with the Florida Panthers. He was making $2.625 million last season before the Panthers decided to buy out the final year of his contract.
After signing his professional tryout with the Leafs, Brad Boyes said on Sportsnet radio Fan 590 on the subject to being bought out.
“I didn’t have as good of a season goal-scoring-wise as I had the year before, but as far as fitting in with the coach (Gerard Gallant) and the new players and being responsible on the ice,” “I didn’t think it would come to being bought out. Traded, maybe.” quote taken from Sportsnet.ca
His goal total dipped from 21 in 2013-14 to 14 last season. Boyes seemed excited for a chance to return to the team that drafted him. When he was asked about how it felt to be traded in 2003 to the San Jose Sharks he said that:
“It was tough, I’ve always wanted to play for the Leafs, so hopefully that opportunity is there in this training camp.”
Now that Boyes has signed his new contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Ontario native has the chance to live the dream that he has had all his life.
