The New York Islanders have signed veteran defenceman Marek Zidlicky to a one-year deal. The team made the announcement on their twitter account.

John Shannon of Sportsnet reports that the deal is for $1.5 million in base salary with significant bonuses. The Islanders had freed up cap space with the recent trade of Michael Grabner to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Zidlicky spent most of last season with the New Jersey Devils, before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings at the NHL trade deadline. The 38-year-old had seven goals and 27 assists for 34 points in the regular season. He didn’t have any points in six playoff games with Detroit.
The native of Most, Czech Republic, was selected by the New York Rangers in the sixth round (No. 176) of the 2001 NHL Draft. He has 85 goals, 401 points and 660 penalty minutes in 783 career NHL games. Zidlicky also has one goal and 15 points in 44 career playoff games. He has played for the Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings.
Zidlicky has represented the Czech Republic in three Olympic Games, and six IIHF World Championships.
Zidlicky is expected to report to the Islanders training camp on Saturday.
