Manchester United youngster James Wilson is set to stay at Old Trafford, despite rumours suggesting he was set to leave the club.
Wilson, 19, was strongly linked with a move to a Championship club last week with Derby County being his most likely destination. However it seems that Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal has had a change of heart and is set to keep the striker at the club.
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett revealed that he has made an enquiry for the England U21 international, but has confirmed that Wilson was not available for loan.
It is thought Wayne Rooney’s slight hamstring injury, which ruled him out of United’s 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven in midweek, is a major factor behind the decision to retain Wilson.
The injury sustained by all time leading England goal scorer Rooney highlighted United’s lack of strength in depth up front. New £38 million signing Anthony Martial led the line for the team in Holland but the 19-year-old failed to add to his debut goal against Liverpool.
Van Gaal decided not to put a recognised striker was on the bench for the tie, although Marouane Fellaini was present. The Belgian midfielder has played in the centre forward role for United in the past.
With this in mind, Van Gaal may be ready to call upon the services of Wilson. He has scored four goals in 18 appearances since making his debut against Hull City in May 2014. He has not featured for the first team so far this campaign.
