Drew Hutchison, right-handed pitcher for The Toronto Blue Jays, has been removed from the starting rotation. It became official on Tuesday, September 15th, 2015 that Hutchison would be placed back in the bullpen. The move came following the recent struggles which Hutchison has endured and with the return of right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman, who had his season debut as the starting pitcher in game 2 of last Saturday’s double-header against The New York Yankees.
Hutchison has encountered difficulty on the road this season and has not experienced the same type of favourable outcomes as last season. Drew Hutchison’s record for 2015 in 27 starts is 13-4, with a 5.33 ERA and 127 strike outs. Hutchison was sent down to triple-A and returned on August 29th, 2015. Hutchison’s ERA at home is 2.91 and on the road his ERA is 9.44.
In the bullpen, Hutchison will be fine tuning his pitches and will for now pitch in one-inning scenarios and more if and when it is required. Manager John Gibbons said “If we need a spot start here or there, he could still come out and do that. He’s built up pretty good but its pretty obvious that he has had some struggles on the road.”
Drew Hutchison said, “You obviously have to make some adjustments. I think for now, it will only be one inning. You just change up your routine, throwing everyday and I’ve talked to a lot of guys who have done both. I haven’t done it before, but I don’t think it will be too big of a deal.”
Going forward, The Blue Jays, will now work with a five man rotation, that will include Marcus Stroman, David Price, R.A. Dickey, Marco Estrada, and Mark Buehrle.
