MLS Power Rankings 15 September 2015
RANK | TEAM | COMMENTS | Last 6 | Previous | Change |
1 | New York Red Bulls |
Red Bulls took advantage of a poor Chicago defense and some generous calls to find themselves in first place in the Eastern Conference. Tough week ahead may be telling of just how serious they are. | 4-1-1 | 1 | 0 |
2 |
New England Revolution |
Five wins in a row is the best mark any team has had this year. Huge midweek matchup looms at home this week against the Eastern leaders RBNY. It will also be the first time they are playing a team ahead of them in the standings since they last met the Red Bulls in a crushing defeat. | 5-0-1 | 4 | +2 |
3 |
LA Galaxy |
LA is struggling on offense in their last two outings, but I wouldn’t worry too much. Not every team can bunker the way Montreal does, and there is still a ton of fire power offensively. | 4-1-1 | 2 | -1 |
4 |
FC Dallas |
Dallas doesn’t have the best record in their last 6, but they have won three in a row. They are getting the job done with effective counter attack, and everyone knows that is still a viable strategy in MLS. All you need is speed, and Dallas has plenty. | 3-3-0 | 3 | -1 |
5 |
Vancouver Whitecaps FC |
Vancouver has been fairly inconsistent of late, but they are still one of the best teams to watch in the league. Their win over Colorado on the weekend exemplifies what depth and youth mean to a squad. Carl Robinson is impressing quite a bit in year two. | 4-2-0 | 5 | 0 |
6 | Columbus Crew SC |
Cbus is one of those teams in the East that can sneak into the playoffs and cause other teams nightmares. Their defense is still worrisome, but they are showing class and skill all over the field. It doesn’t hurt to have two of the best attacking players in the league up top either. | 4-1-1 | 8 | +2 |
7 |
San Jose Earthquakes |
San Jose had a strong run to enter September, but they have cooled just a tad since then. I still wouldn’t bet against Dominic Kinnear in the fall. The guy is a wizard. | 4-1-1 | 6 | -1 |
8 |
Seattle Sounders FC |
Seattle is climbing back up the table. Getting a result at San Jose was big for a team previously terrorized by the ‘Quakes. Losing Torres is a big blow though.’ | 3-2-1 | 9 | +1 |
9 |
Colorado Rapids |
Colorado had two rough results, but they are ending the season strong. Still think they need to look to the future a bit and play some of their younger players, but there is still a lot to like about how the Rapids are closing out the season. | 3-2-1 | 12 | +3 |
10 |
Portland Timbers |
Portland’s offense continues to sputter and the results have been less than kind. Newcomer Lucas was supposed to fix some of that, right? Trouble is, midseason acquisitions rarely excel in year one. | 2-1-3 | 14 | +4 |
11 |
Philadelphia Union |
The Union moved up the list thanks to the poor performances of the team’s underneath them. Still lacking cohesion and an identity that could turn a talented attacking side into something more. | 2-2-2 | 15 | +4 |
12 |
D.C. United |
D.C. may have finally turned things around salvaging a draw at Colorado. No less than 3 teams are breathing down their neck. A top two finish seems unlikely at this point, but holding onto 3rd or 4th could be crucial. On the road, they have scored just 9 goals this year. | 2-3-1 | 11 | -1 |
13 |
Houston Dynamo |
Houston letting points slip shows they are not quite ready for the playoffs. Something is missing for the Dynamo, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. They look very good defensively one week, and a mess the next. | 2-3-1 | 13 | 0 |
14 |
Toronto FC |
Toronto played well, but got punished for their mistakes against the Revs. I’m still confident they make the playoffs, but don’t expect more than a single game on the road for the Reds. | 2-4-0 | 10 | -4 |
15 |
>Real Salt Lake |
I’m sure RSL wish they could play Houston every week. Two of their 4 wins in the last two months came against the Orange menace. | 2-4-0 | 17 | +2 |
16 |
Montreal Impact |
Much respect to Montreal. They are to date the only Eastern club to earn a point in the home depot center. That they did it without Laurent Ciman is especially noteworthy. Montreal will make the playoffs this year making it the first time all three Canadian clubs will be in the hunt for the trophy | 1-3-2 | 16 | 0 |
17 |
Chicago Fire |
Another team that benefits from the teams below them boosting their rating. Chicago had their first road win in 22 tries with the Red Bulls on the ropes, and let it slip through their fingers. The Fire’s road record reads a bit like a certain Cormac McCarthy novel. There is no hope out there. | 1-3-2 | 18 | +1 |
18 |
Orlando City SC |
Orlando has spent this season torturing Western teams that make the trip down to the Orange Bowl. They got a big boost from the return of Brek Shea, and should e happy with some of the pieces they have in place moving into next year. Playoffs aren’t out of the question just yet, but I think it is extremely unlikely at this point. | 1-3-2 | 20 | +2 |
19 |
Sporting Kansas City |
SKC is in the clutches of an truly epic collapse. They remain in the playoff hunt with a two point lead and games in hand. Limping towards the finish line with a tired team means my magic eight ball doesn’t like their chances. | 1-4-1 | 7 | -12 |
20 |
New York City FC |
I should have been running a counter for teams that spent time at the bottom and the top this year. NYC sure has a lot of mess to clean up going into next year. I know the year isn’t over yet, and I know they really aren’t that far out of the playoffs, but the clock is ticking. | 1-4-1 | 19 | -1 |
