Szczęsny Clean Sheet, Toral Assist Highlight Arsenal Loanee Weekend
Wojciech Szczęsny kept a clean sheet as Roma won 2-0 over Frosinone in Serie A action. The win kept Roma’s unbeaten to start their campaign, as they sit two points off the top of the table. Szczęsny was actually the busier of the two goalkeepers, making five saves, compared to only one for Frosinone ‘keeper, Nicola Leali.
Yaya Sanogo came on in the 78th minute, as Ajax drew 2-2 with FC Twente. Unfortunately, it was another poor performance from the forward, who failed to make the case for increased minutes.
Serge Gnabry was an unused substitute for West Brom as they drew 0-0 with Southampton. After showing flashes of brilliance in limited minutes early on, Gnabry looked to be making a case for more minutes and will be disappointed to, again, be left on the bench.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles was brought on in the 68th minute as Ipswich fell 5-1 to Reading. After drawing level at 1-1 early in the match, it all went wrong for Ipswich, who will hope to recover quickly from such a loss.
Isaac Hayden started and went 68 minutes for Hull City, whilst Chuba Akpom started and played 82 minutes as Hull lost 1-0 to Brighton in the Championship. Hayden was heavily involved in the midfield build-up for Hull throughout his time on the pitch. Akpom managed two shots on target, including forcing a good save from the Brighton ‘keeper in the first 20 minutes.
Jon Toral assisted on the second goal as Birmingham City won 4-2 over Bristol. Toral began on the field and went 69 minutes, setting up the goal and nearly creating another. Toral’s assist was a thing of beauty; he dribbled through the Bristol defence before playing a pass into the path of Clayton Donaldson in the 20th minute.
Wellington Silva began and completed the full 90 minutes for Bolton as they beat Wolves 2-1 on Saturday. The Arsenal man created one chance, but was wasteful in his crossing and failed to complete many of his passes. On the other side, Emiliano Martinez made four saves but conceded twice for Wolves.
Gedion Zelalem started and played 74 minutes as Rangers won again, this time 3-0 over Livingston. After his fast start, it’s almost disappointing to say that Zelalem failed to register an assist, but that would be unfair on the Arsenal man. He did have a penalty shout waved off early in the first half as he was tripped dribbling into the box, but failed to get the call from the Ref. The Rangers’ win meant they continued their perfect start to the season, earning 18 points through six matches.
In a weekend of mixed results and performances, the highlights were clearly the Szczęsny clean sheet and Toral assist. Perhaps most disappointing was Gnabry again failing to get on the pitch. Wenger and Arsenal have touted him as a top talent, and a loan to a Premier League side was seen as the final stage before hopefully breaking into the Arsenal squad. If he can’t get minutes at West Brom, however, this could become a wasted season for the youngster.
