Roger Federer booked his place in the 2015 US Open Final after a superb 6-4, 6-3 6-1 victory over fellow Swiss national Stan Wawrinka. The result never looked in doubt with Federer improving with every game to dispatch Wawrinka with relative ease. Most impressive of all was the speed in which Federer closed out the match getting the job done in just 1 hour and 32 minutes under the floodlights of Arthur Ashe.
Federer took the first set in strange fashion. Despite not playing some of the top drawer tennis he’s pulled out over the last fortnight Wawrinka was unable to capitalise on his four break points as Federer took the set 6-4. Federer’s break came in the third game thanks to some clever net play while Wawrinka struggled to find his range. Federer then went three break points down in the fifth game, but his resilience was evident and Federer managed to hold leaving Wawrinka a set down and frustrated despite playing equally good tennis.
In the second set Federer’s serve grew in consistency with Wawrinka struggling to open up his Davis cup team-mate’s solid serve and volley tactics. However, Wawrinka seemed buoyed after holding off five break points in the fifth game to keep in touch of Federer. It mattered little in the grand scheme of things as Federer claimed the crucial break to love just two games later. Federer went on to claim the set 6-3 displaying some age defying athleticism in the process with Wawrinka seemingly having no answer to the 17 time grand slam champion’s onslaught.
The third set started out in pedestrian fashion but in the third game a sensational rally set up break point for Federer which he converted as he now had one foot in Sunday’s final. No matter what Wawrinka threw at Federer he found the balls kept coming back over the net and this led to a catalogue of unforced errors by the French Open champion as Federer raced into a 5-1. Federer then served out for the victory claiming the final set 6-1. Despite the result Wawrinka will still climb to 4th in the world rankings overtaking Kei Nishikori, who drops points from his US Open final last season.
Federer advances to the final where he will now face Novak Djokovic after the Serb defeated defending champion Marin Cilic in emphatic style 6-0,6-2,6-2. The mouth watering tie is a repeat of this years Wimbledon final where Djokovic prevailed in four sets. However with both men looking in supreme form the outcome of this match up may not be so clear. No matter what the outcome may be on Sunday it promises to be a fascinating encounter between these two great rivals.
